I am not a super teacher…
April 22, 2009
In a class of freshmen during my English period, one student caught my attention. A skinny girl, who is timidly staring at the pages of her textbook, seemed to have difficulty grasping the message of the selection. She frowned but still managed to give me a smile when she noticed that I had my eyes on her. Then she mumbled words from the selection but never in synch with the rest of her classmates. I took a silent pace to where she sat so I could figure out what she was up to… The book was turned on the right page, anyway.
In an almost similar setting, I am amazed to notice how one student who got the rating of ‘frustration’ during the PHIL-IRI pre-test became almost proficient in reading as learning sessions go on. It was such an achievement on his part. However, when assessed how well he understood the selection through the comprehension questions, his eyes protruded as its pupils tend to skim through the texts on the book, hoping to get a gold mine.
The two kinds of students I have observed needed special concern. An English teacher or anyone who endures on promoting quality learning would surely agree with me that these learners require painstaking concentration.
The students have to learn how [including what] to read. I remember an author saying, “Readers are plentiful; thinkers are rare!” Indeed, it is an arduous battle for educators like me to combat illiteracy among our students and arm them with essential life skills.
As a beginning mentor, it is very challenging to teach young learners. It is even more challenging to teach challenged learners. Thus, whenever I’m in front of my learners, subconsciously, I ask myself of these questions: “Am I a good teacher? Am I connecting with my learners? Am I performing my best for them? Am I helping them? Am I able to bring out the best in them?” The list of questions goes on….
Maybe I am sensitive…. I am receptive to the fact that my students are but just human, permeable for imperfection and can gear up towards progress.
Maybe I am compassionate… as the second parent of my students, I am sympathetic of their desire to learn and explore the diverse facets of learning.
Maybe I am ambitious… I dream for my learners. I wish them the best of their future. I pray that they would be able to surface out from their cocoons and eventually fly.
Maybe I am optimistic… I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed regardless of their socio-economic status, family background, and socio-cultural orientation.
I am not a good teacher, I guess. But I’m trying to be one. I become impatient at times. I frown and might have made offensive comments against my students especially when they seemed passive. I became frustrated whenever I felt I gave my best but achieved less and even became more disheartened when I felt I’ve done not much at all.
I want to connect with my learners… I want to spend more time with them helping them discover their potentials… overcome their weaknesses and hone up their strengths.
In the case of my instructional and frustration level readers, I hope I can help them not only to learn how and what to read. I hope I can guide them to become able readers who are skilled of grasping and digesting vital ideas through the texts inscribed on their books.
I don’t dream of being a super teacher. I just simply want to care.

When all you need to do is to heave a sigh…
April 15, 2009
The summer sun scorches. The wind that gusts on the rear of the car brings me no relief. The backlog on my table never dwindles. My head begins to explode…
I know I must be home early to produce a hard copy of the reports I was hurrying to finish before another tasks begin to pile up. I want to remain sane and poised despite all these cramming. After all, had I not procrastinated, I should have been enjoying my limited summer vacation.
My bowel has been festering me for three days now; making my day’s out-of-town business edgy as I constantly worry about messing up on my pants. The possible stinks and the sight of swarming flies terrorize me most. I always dreamed of being the center of attention but never as an epicenter of abasement.
I was meeting a former colleague from whom I shall be securing my payroll slip and it took me more than half-an-hour waiting by myself. I almost frown yet remained tolerant… Thanks to my cellphone enrolled in my network provider’s unlimited SMS services offer – I was entertained.
It was a quarter before midday when she and her friend arrived on wheels. I was hoping she would invite me even for an austere lunch at their place but she invited me instead to get a ride towards the waiting shed at the crossing which leads home.
It was past twelve when I arrived at my second itinerary so I proceeded to a cafeteria first to have a refill. Everyone seems friendly except for a couple of servers who found my pronunciation of a soda brand ridiculous and another one who seemed to have a cold shoulder over my request. [The latter was mute, I found out]. I can’t give them a stern look. I’m too tired and hungry to be dreadful.
It was almost one o’ clock but I decided to drop by in an internet café after receiving a text that the staffs are just having their lunch too. My forty minutes was spent deleting my e-mails and checking the comments on my blogs [but there was none at all].
It was almost two o’ clock when my business was finally over. After a few minutes of filling up a little information on the 2316 form I tried to rush home.
Unfortunately a jeepney has just passed by a few minutes after I disembarked from the tricycle. It meant more minutes of delay and a direct contact with the roasting sun. I was glad a cup of halo-halo was enough to cool me down.
Indeed sometimes, my life’s journey offers unwanted diversions. Some of these were inevitable. Others are needless detours. My choice to get through, to have my hasty U-turn or even to take the most unexpected alternative route depends on how I assess and cope with the situation.
Not all that I want and expect to transpire occurs perfectly just as I wished them to be. Surprises – and trivial whatnots no matter how unpleasant they become are ingredients to a meaningful and happy living, I believe.
When things went wrong, I should be forbearing. When someone did me wrong, I must be forgiving… just as I should forgive myself for the flaws I made against others and into myself… After all, life is about enjoying every moment that unfold no matter how bleak they may seem.

FAREWELL 2008….
December 31, 2008[preblogged: December 30, 2008, 4:18 PM]
J The gift of friendship…
J The gift of caring from relatives and better acquaintances…
J The gift of opening doors for professional growth…
J The gift of financial stability…
I always believed that my idea was the most practical option. Yet I found no one to back up my side. The table could have turned against me had I became resolute of my dissent. Rather than calming, I could have exacerbated the circumstances.
In the end, it was I who became acquiescent of the options I never conformed with. I had no choice. After all, every thing turns out to be just fine as we all wished it to be. I had to stash away my personal sentiments from my family and reserve it for myself solely.
The events that took place last September gave way to my reaffirmation that my family is such a wonderful treasure in my life. More than just being considered as my closest family members this year, Mama and my sister Julie have been very positive in helping me discover myself to emerge thankful and contented amidst heartache and self-pity. Most importantly, I am deeply touched of their acceptance for me as an individual who is permeable to commit faults and opt for unwise choice.
A family remains a family come what may. Love must transcend over differences at all times despite unease and adversities.
Particularly, I’m glad to see that my mother is overcoming her very slim figure. Thanks God, she gains a little flab this year. Father seems to enjoy his post as our barangay chieftain despite a few challenging setbacks. My siblings have been very well this (not to mention my youngest bro who got a row of seven-something in his school’s report card during the first grading period). My sister Julie continues her studies in college and I am happy for her [although she frustrated me of having two succeeding bfs within a semester only].
2008 is also year of cultivating friendship. I have gained new friends, restrengthened old ties and discovered (and rediscovered) valuable relationships this year.
Lanie and Christopher top the list of the very best of friends who mean so much to me this year.
Lanie had been such a blessing not only because she adopted me during my stay in Daraga for summer but most importantly for the very exceptional moments we shared. Our friendly walks to Ligňon Hill to unwind, and our ‘pilgrimage’ to Santo Cristo Chapel every Friday and novenas to Saint Jude come Thursdays and to Our Lady of Perpetual Help at Albay Cathedral or Saint Rafael Church during Wednesdays are one of the best moments I am thankful of. I can still recall how she was baffled when after a confession I decided to invite her to go home without even uttering a prayer. As a result, we become prayer partners. The rosary nights have become solemn most of the times but proved to be therapeutic (for sleeping purposes) at times, too.
Lanie has been an uncomplaining ear, a comforting shoulder, a crying buddy, a pampering pal, a minding dietician, a smart adviser, a thoughtful friend, and most importantly a best sister-confidant. She even serves as my psychoanalyst critique (hehe she oftentimes comment on my ‘premature’ misdemeanors and refrain me from doing my ‘fixation’ [I hope I quote the right term she said] rituals).
Christopher, on the same hand, has become a very intimate friend. My friendship with him taught me a lot of lessons in life. It is with him that I gained confidence in expressing my innermost thoughts I usually reserved for myself most of the times.
Like Nanie, he has become a good listener… Though he’s a bit taciturn, he offered comforting words in times I needed it most. He has always been a straightforward yet a tactful buddy. The last quarter of this year has almost strained our friendship but I am thankful it was renewed before the year departs. His Christmas vacation has been advantageous to recoup waning ties and foster a boost on a much meaningful friendship.
Bito and Ninoy are among the better friends I can’t afford to lose. I miss bonding with these guys. We have separate circle of friends but the friendship remains firm. Our very rare ‘talkathon’ never becomes boring whenever we meet.
This year, I yearned for a closer bonding with some better friends. I missed the hearty conversation with Cyi and Ryan who is now blessed with a very cute baby girl, Mary Cyrene who happens to be my godchild. I missed chatting with Gerome who appears to be enjoying his moments with his old and new batch of friends. Very seldom did I hear also of Ranran’s clever jokes and astounding revelations this year. I missed my CYC family especially Kuya Boboy who never get tired of inviting me back in the group. I missed having an intelligent conversation with Kirby… I missed everyone who had become so close to me for the past years…
Indeed I missed a lot of people this year.
I missed visiting Edz and Rachel, the closest friends I had in college. Our visit in the wake of Wilma’s brother (who was brutally killed) in a far-flung area in Bacon District last May was the first and last reunion we had since college. Unfortunately, it was never the right moment to revisit happy past. Nevertheless, it was a meaningful bonding with old and best of friends.
I missed having a frequent relaxing conversation with Manay Meliss and Tekla. Our bonding nowadays usually involve internet surfing and Friendster uploading, etc but I missed the days of unlimited exchange of silly gags and trivial gossips.
I missed Bibi, Mabell and Nini (Mildred). Only technology binds us together this year. SMS and Friendster are the best means for us to update ourselves with our activities these days. We’ve met only once this year. It happened last All Soul’s Day as we spent almost three hours of reminiscing our childhood past while resting on my grandparents’ tomb.
Modern technology link Johnberk, Nini (Rachelle), Mona, Erwin, Sandra, Caren and I closer, too. Cellphones and Friendster do help a lot.
While friends like Manay Ritz and Sir Oliver stay supportive all through this year, new friends added color to my life, as well. Among the good friends I have met are Kuya Gil, Tita Beth, Tita Fe and Tita Jojie (my classmates in BU). Mam Dianne, Sir Gigi and Sir Rene have been such a blessing, too. The pretty lasses in our school – Mam Aya, Mam Julie and Mam Vickylyn – were not only very reliable and responsible. They, too, have been better circle of friends.
CREATE CUTS Editing Your Life
December 22, 2008Creative Cuts Editing Your Life
Our lives can be compared to an ongoing movie script over which we have complete creative control. Within us lies the power to examine what works or isn’t working in our lives and make “edits” to our life’s script, accordingly. Choosing to actively edit your life can be incredibly empowering. As you evolve, you have the choice to accept the script you’ve written thus far or edit it so you can create a life that fulfills you. You can cut out from your life’s script what is no longer working for you. Acknowledging that you are responsible for the experience you create gives you the ability to create the life you’ve always longed for.
Granted, editing your real life isn’t always as easy as erasing a line of text. If you’ve carried emotional baggage or held on to an unhealthy relationship for a long time, these may be difficult to edit out. But when you do cut out what isn’t working from your life, you’ll feel lighter and more alive. Editing out activities that you find stressful, disassociating yourself from people that drain your energy, and letting go of your emotional baggage are all beneficial cuts you can make. In the empty spaces that are left behind, you can add in anything you like. Just as you have the power to edit out negative situations or beliefs that you no longer wish to have as part of your life, you can now include the kinds of positive experiences, people, and beliefs that you would like to fill your life with. The manifestation of these thoughts and images as realities in your life will inevitably follow. As you make changes to your life, you can also add in the bits where you choose more intimate, healthier relationships, seek out adventure over tedium, and are no longer negatively impacted by old experiences.
To begin editing your life, simply think about your positive and negative experiences. When you determine what parts of your life are no longer serving you, make the commitment to remove them – though, it is important to remember that there is no proper timing or way to do this, and patience and compassion for yourself are always important during this process. Then, ask yourself what has brought you profound bliss and consider how you can make those experiences and beliefs part of your life now. With a little editing, you’ll be able to clear out what is no longer serving you and make room in your life for more happiness, love, and wisdom.

BLESSINGS
“The happiest people don’t have everything they want… They make the most out of what they already have… Misery starts when a person looks at the 10% missing and overlooks the 90% blessing… We all have our own share of blessings… Some get them fast…. Dahlia [February 21, 2009; 06:53]
“What is a trash can?
To a toddler, it’s just a shelf of his ugly toys…
To a pupil, it’s where she keeps her bad test papers…
To a teenager, it’s a basket case for the letters of an ex-lover…
To a writer, it is a file of rejected drafts…
But to a street child, with a trash can, life goes on…
See how blessed we are?
Nini [January 17, 2009; 10:47]

Mam Donna [November 11, 2008; 10:31]
“What is life? They said it was from B to D. What’s B to D?
It was from BIRTH to DEATH.
So life starts the day you were born to the day you die…
But what’s between B and D? It’s C…
What is C? It’s a CHOICE…
So our life is a matter of choice.
Live it well.”

EXCELLENCE
“There are million reasons why good things never last. But there is only one logical answer to it. Good things never last because these were never meant to be the BEST!”
Mam Cell [March 3, 2009; 10:02]
EXIST
“The best thing that you can do for someone is to just exist… to be there when they suddenly realize that they need you right then…”
Fely [July 4, 2009; 08:27]; Fabis [June 10, 2009; 05:19]
FAILURE
“Never use failure as an excuse for not trying again. We may not be able to undo the damage or reverse the consequences but we can always make a new start…”
Mam Gina [July 17, 2009; 20:57]
“Never hate the times in life where you have fallen or failed. Though hard to accept, these are the times wherein we stand back and show the world that failures don’t define us, but it is what make us stronger…”
bu Mam Gie [March 22, 2009; 23:01]
“When we can begin to take our failures nonseriously, it means we are ceasing to be afraid of them. It is of immense importance to learn to laugh at ourselves. – Katherine Mansfield”
Angie [January 3, 2009; 19:08]
FAITH
“Faith teaches us to believe no matter what situation we’re having right now… Hold on… be strong. Don’t give up. God works in ways we cannot see.”
Suzette [April 14, 2009;05:10]; Joseph [January 19, 2009; 06:42]
“A heart that has firm faith is not easily frightened by trials because it knows well that God never abandons those who trust Him.”
Glory Rose [April 2, 2009; 06:13]

Three (3) basic principles to which you should remember in a relationship…. ‘Love more, expect less… Get hurt, cry, then love even more.’ Live by this, live through this and eventually you’ll realize that: Love is being able to give more when you have nothing left… Complicated yet true…”

Erwin [July 20, 2009; 04:20]; Mam Hilda [March 22, 2009; 22:09]; Dahlia [January 15, 2009; 21:52]
“Thought to ponder: Time heals almost everything, give time.”
Mam Julie [November 28, 2008; 21:55]
“The notion that there might be a better and more convenient time to patch things up has cost a lot of people a lifetime of regret… So don’t let the chance be gone forever because of what you call – the right time.”
Mam Julie [November 25, 2008; 22:44]
TRIALS
“Prayer is the best shield against all trials. A heart to heart talk with God will lessen your burden for He will never say no to those who believe in Him.”
Mam Hilda [February 26, 2009; 22:12]
“Behind every event is God’s purpose. At times what we consider a trial is simply his permission for us to rearrange our lives to be more meaningful.”
Nanie [February 26, 2009; 17:20]
“Trials exist not because God wants to test you. That is a lie. He already know your capabilities, more than you can imagine. Trials exist because you need to learn things: Learn to look back lesson from experience. Value everything you have. Discipline in your home. Stand and be wise. Humble yourself. Faith in God.”
Dahlia [January 6, 2009; 06:41]
TRUST
“Worrying doesn’t change anything. But trusting in the Lord changes everything. When we put our cares in God’s hands, He puts His peace in our hearts.”
Tita Jonalyn [May 8, 2009; 00:59]
“Wonder why God did not give us the gift to read the minds of other people? So we could have the chance to trust, and the privilege to be trusted…”
Mildred [February 22, 2009;06:38]
“Don’t trust people who don’t love themselves and yet tell you, “I love you.”
There is an African saying that says: “Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.”

“One day, the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer everyone gathered but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH. When you throw a one year old baby in the air, he laughs because he knows you will catch him. That’s TRUST. Every night we go to bed, we’re not sure we’ll get up tomorrow, yet we still have many plans for the coming day. That’s HOPE. Have faith, trust in God and never lose hope.”

TRUTH
“To hide the truth is futile, instead seek the truth that is within you and you shall find the answer.”
Angelica [January 28, 2009; 21:28]
UNIQUENESS
“One thing we’ve go to learn is that no person is better than the other. Some are blessed with knowledge, some with good looks, some with great wealth, some with strength, and some with a unique gift from God that they have yet to find… The essence of being is not your rank or ‘greatness’ but being who God made you to be.”
Mam Gina [December 11, 2008; 21:21]
VIRTUES
“Three (3) things in life that never comes back when gone: - TIME, WORD, &
Three (3) things in life that should never be lost: - PEACE, HOPE, & HONESTY;
Three (3) things in life that are most valuable: - LOVE, FAITH, & PRAYER;
Three (3) thing sin life that make a person: - HARDWORK, SINCERITY &, COMMITMENT;

Remembering Old Rose
November 6, 2008“GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL.”
(I am sharing you an inspiring adaptation from an e-mail I received underscoring the importance of enhancing self-concept through the course of time… Hope this would bring inspiration to you, too. )

Remembering Old Rose
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, ‘Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?’
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, ‘Of course you may!’ and she gave me a giant squeeze.
‘Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?’ I asked.
She jokingly replied, ‘I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…’
‘No seriously,’ I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
‘I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m ge tting one!’ she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this ‘time machine’ as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, ‘I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whi skey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.’
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began…
‘We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.’
She concluded her speech by courageously singing ‘The Rose.’
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.
Note: These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.

… “Kuya, ako tatao na!”
Makusog mong suriyaw
Pugol ang manibela asin sa pedal minasikad na maogma…

______________
This simple Bicol poem is dedicated to my dear sister, Malou. “Mus… Bayk Kita!” conveys how I love her… how I wouldn’t want to give up on her… how willing I am to be her listening ears and comforting shoulders despite everything that has gone by.
Forgive me with my analogy, but I chose to resemble life [the life that we have had] with a bicycle. The two of us had fun when we were very young, struggling to remain steady on the wobbly bike… She, a bit hesitant to step on the sloppy pedals, was shaking while taking a clench on the handlebars. While I, with obvious prudence, support the saddle and the other handle of the bike…It is heartwarming to reminisce old memories like this one… [Sigh…]
Yet, life is not always an easy road. Sometimes, if not too often, we stumble… Hindrances, no matter how we avoid them, become startling blocks of our trip to remind us how splendid our journey can be amidst difficulties and challenges. After all, every journey ceases not with a disheartening stop-over, I believe.
My world crashed when one of the most disheartening instances in my life went off. My sister gets pregnant in the most untimely moment. She has to focus on her studies (as I always emphasized in our simple conversations and a couple of heart-to-heart talks) and prioritize it over her personal affairs. But then, she frustrated us…
Looking back on the most personal conversations we have had several times, I reflect on questions such as: “How far did I manage to be a good counselor to my sister?, Had I underemphasized how significant it is for her to be on the right track?, Weren’t my words encouraging enough?”
I am disheartened…. But I am not giving up… I will never give up on her …
I am thankful for the moments that she trusted me to coach her riding on the bike… and those times that she listened [though she didn’t pay heed] to whatever brotherly words I uttered then.
The bike which rusts with time might raze and clank the moment she opts to ask me for a leisurely bike but it is just around waiting for another ride. So is a brother’s caring heart that, amidst hurting, still looks forward to embracing her as it says, “It’s just okay. Let’s try another ride!”
Nails in the fence
October 31, 2008“The best remedy for a short temper is a long walk. ” ~Jacqueline Schiff There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.
The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.
The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.”
The little boy then understood how powerful his words were. He looked up at his father and said “I hope you can forgive me father for the holes I put in you.”
“Of course I can,” said the father.
For our anger and short temper Christ took a long walk to control it; all the way to Calvary. He let angry men put him on a cross with three, rusty nails. And as the nails were pulled out anger had been conquered. His scars like the fence are there cause of our anger to remind us of the cost. Love is stronger than hate.

A Great Story About Life
(an adaptation from an e-mail sent by my friend Caren)
I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprizing a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes, but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas.
I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.
‘Hello Barry, how are you today?’
‘H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus’ admirin’ them peas. They sure look good.’
‘They are good, Barry. How’s your Ma?’
‘Fine. Gittin’ stronger alla’ time.’
‘Good. Anything I can help you with?’
‘No, Sir. Jus’ admirin’ them peas.’
‘Would you like take some home?’ asked Mr. Miller.
‘No, Sir . Got nuthin’ to pay for ‘em with.’
‘Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?’
‘All I got’s my prize marble here.’
‘Is that right? Let me see it’ said Miller.
‘Here ’tis. She’s a dandy.’
‘I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?’ the store owner asked.
‘Not zackley but almost.’
‘Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble’, Mr. Miller told the boy.
‘Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.’
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.
With a smile said, ‘There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.
When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn’t like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.’
I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man.
A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.
Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.
Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.
They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.
Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.
Ahead of us in line were three young men.
One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts…all very professional looking.
They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband’s casket.
Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.
Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket.
Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband’s bartering for marbles.
With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.
‘Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them.
Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size ….they came to pay their debt.’
‘We’ve never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,’ she confided, ‘but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho ‘
With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles ….
The Moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our deeds.
Why Does Man Always Blame God?
It has been six months since I was terminated from my first job. Unlike most college graduates, I was immediately employed by a company in which I started as an On-the-Job trainee. When I graduated, they absorbed me. I was so thankful then, because in spite of the stiff competition, aside from the fact that I am not a degree holder, finding a good job is very difficult.
My family went through a financial crisis and the back-pay I received from my company is finished. I was the eldest son so I really felt the weight of hardship. But I held on to my faith that God will give me a job. But I can’t help feeling scared, discouraged and dismayed. I grew up in a Christian family and in my knowledge, it is a sin to get angry with God.
My mother and I used to dispute over finances. One day we had a row because she told me I am not exerting enough effort to look for a job. She said I am only sitting all day surfing the internet and spending a lot. When I explained to her that I am looking for a job through the internet, she didn’t believe me. I did not argue anymore because there were no Jobstreet and JobsDB in her time. I was so down then and she will nag at me about my being jobless and useless. I was never disrespectful to my mother even if I am hurt by her words.
And at times I feel so weak and I need a mother to comfort me, it was the opposite. I am looking for a job, I am exerting much effort, but why does it seem something is deterring? All the companies I applied to were not calling me. And if somebody calls, I fail the exams. I felt like my chest is exploding and I ran upstairs. I banged the door and cried my heart out in my bed. I was blaming God. I knew it is wrong to get angry with God but I can’t help it.
Tears flowed on my pillow and I poured all my emotions against God. I don’t care anymore if He gets angry with me.
“I’m so disappointed with You, Lord! Why are You doing this to me? I cannot pretend anymore with You, it’s the same thing. You see what’s really inside my heart.”
I continued to pour my anger towards Him as if it is a friend who hurt me I am talking to. I admitted my fears, doubts, weakness, and even my secret dismay and anger towards Him.
“I held on to my faith but why were You not answering me?”
After some time, I felt eased. The rage I felt changed to resentment only. Then I saw myself talking, like sharing my hurt to a friend, a friend who truly understands my reactions because of my bitterness against him. A few minutes later, hope came back and my faith to His promise that He will not forsake me. And for the first time after I became a Christian, I prayed wholeheartedly and earnestly…
“Lord, I am hurting. You know how much I suffered when I lost my job. I want to be honest with You, since You know what’s inside my heart. I am scared about my future, that I may not be able to work again. It’s so hard to find a job, most of the company take university graduates and degree holders. I am only a technician. If it is possible, remove me from this situation. I can’t take it anymore. But I still put my trust in You. I want to believe, help me with my unbelief.”
I cried again. “If my will is to be done, I want to put an end to this. But if I really have to go through this my Lord, if going through this pain would make me a better person, then I surrender to Your will…even if You see me hurting, even if You see me crying, if this would bring glory to Your Name…don’t stop Lord…DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU ARE FINISHED!!’
After saying this, I felt cool air surround my whole body. It felt like hugging me. I felt a little strange, but I felt more strange when I heard a still small voice, talking to my heart.
“Finally, My child, you have learned your lesson.”
In one snap, my mind was enlightened and I understood that God wanted me to go through all of these so I can know His power. For seven months, He stopped the rain of blessings so I can be honest with him, even to unpleasant emotions that I feel. I realized that God wanted us to be honest and authentic with Him rather than praising Him outside our heart. In those seven months, He taught me how to be like King David, being openly honest to Him. Before, I used to know about Him…but now I know Him…deeply, personally.
Then the Voice continued, “Now, tell Me what kind of job you want.”
Because I learned to be honest, I became specific.
“Lord, I want a job with above minimum salary. I want a workplace near my home. I want to develop more my skills in IT or computer, a company where I can study in the evenings so I will learn the latest on IT. If it is possible, I want Christian officemates. And Lord, is it okay to make a request?…can I have a job where I can wear long-sleeved shirt and a necktie?”
I don’t know but maybe He smiled at what I said.
Tok, tok…I was surprised when somebody knocked at the faculty room. I was awakened from my flashback. “Sir RJ, your students for the Programming class have arrived. Room 3.”
I replied that I’ll follow. Our morning devotion, which is part of the daily routine in Informatics, Ortigas Branch has just finished. My workplace is only two rides away from home. I’ve been here for a year now. I don’t study in the evenings anymore because our company provides training on latest IT courses for IT instructors like me, so we can teach the students. After some time, I heard the song Through It All playing on the background from the manager’s office. It is boss’ favorite. I fixed the fold of my sleeves and tightened my necktie before I left the faculty room….

Living and Loving
October 19, 2008One weekend, as I have my comforting gardening rituals, hoping to cut loose from the exhausting and challenging past weekdays experience, my eyes take a stirring glance on the bonsai my friend gave me… Two new caterpillars are beginning to nibble on the green little leaves my plant has. Poor plant, I subconsciously say to myself…
Two empty cocoons were still clinging on my plant’s tiny bough. It was not long when another hungry creatures gnawed on the same plant until they found themselves satiated… ready to have their ‘rest’ in their silk-like homes. Now those once-ugly creeping worms are fluttering freely with the gentle winds, I believe.
Young yellow green leaves begin to grow now. I’m happy to see that my plant has its rebirth and is spreading its tiny yet sturdy arms this time… Not until I catch sight of these two new needy creatures, lazily inching from one twig to another.
I worried that my plant would eventually die should it keep these transient dwellers.
But what an expression of altruistic love! I inspiringly told myself.
Several times, I find myself frustrated of what had transpired in me (and the people around me, especially those I value most)… Exhausted and most often displeased of what turned out despite crucial attempts to fix things suitably, I ask myself, “When would I stop complaining about things?” “Until when must I love?”
This poor plant of mine does not even know that a pair of creeping creatures depends on it… Above all, it does not even know what LOVE is…
Yet, it teaches me lesson I should sincerely heed: Never get tired of being a fountain source of solace for others no matter where it may lead you or it may cost you…
I am pained and bruised for the nth time… I feel, at times, that I am just used up… that the world is taking advantage of me… that I am needed more than I am loved… I fear that setbacks shall wither my spirit and bleakness overshadows me.
My plant has almost lost all of its leaves or could have withered too soon before the flimsy wings of these new would-be butterflies spring out of the cocoon… Yet it never stops surviving… Its fresh leaves are munched every now and then but then they keep on growing…
My precious plant keeps on surviving… for its own and for others…
